Space Quiz for Kids โ€” Planets, Stars and Rockets!

March 2026 ยท 6 min read ยท Ages 5โ€“10

Space is one of the most exciting topics for curious kids! From the fiery Sun at the centre of our solar system to the icy moons of distant Neptune, the universe is full of incredible things to discover. In this guide we share amazing space facts and quiz questions that will take your child's knowledge to the stars!

Our Solar System

Our solar system is made up of the Sun, eight planets, dozens of moons, and millions of asteroids and comets. Everything in the solar system orbits โ€” or travels around โ€” the Sun because of its enormous gravitational pull. The Sun is so large that over one million Earths could fit inside it!

๐Ÿš€ Fun Fact #1: The Sun is a star โ€” just like the stars you see at night โ€” but it appears much bigger and brighter because it is much closer to Earth than any other star.

The Eight Planets

In order from closest to the Sun, the eight planets are:

โšซ

Mercury

Smallest planet, closest to the Sun

๐ŸŸก

Venus

Hottest planet, covered in thick clouds

๐ŸŒ

Earth

Our home โ€” the only planet with life

๐Ÿ”ด

Mars

The Red Planet โ€” has the tallest volcano

๐ŸŸ

Jupiter

Biggest planet โ€” a giant made of gas

๐Ÿ’›

Saturn

Has beautiful rings made of ice and rock

๐Ÿ”ต

Uranus

Spins on its side โ€” very unusual!

๐ŸŸฃ

Neptune

Farthest planet โ€” has the fastest winds

๐Ÿš€ Fun Fact #2: A memory trick to remember the planets in order: My Very Energetic Mother Just Served Us Nachos โ€” Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune!

The Moon

Earth's Moon is the fifth largest moon in the entire solar system. It takes about 27 days for the Moon to travel around Earth. The Moon has no atmosphere, which means there is no wind or weather โ€” footprints left by astronauts in 1969 are still there today!

๐Ÿš€ Fun Fact #3: Neil Armstrong was the first human to walk on the Moon on 20 July 1969. His famous words were: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

Stars and the Milky Way

A star is a giant ball of hot gas that produces its own light and heat through a process called nuclear fusion. Our Sun is a medium-sized star. The Milky Way is the galaxy we live in โ€” it contains over 200 billion stars! On a clear night away from city lights, you can actually see part of the Milky Way as a faint band of light across the sky.

๐Ÿš€ Fun Fact #4: Light travels at 300,000 kilometres per second. Even at that speed, light from the Sun takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth โ€” and light from the nearest other star takes over 4 years!

Rockets and Space Exploration

Rockets are the only vehicles powerful enough to travel through space. They work by burning fuel that creates a huge thrust of hot gas downward, pushing the rocket upward โ€” this is Newton's Third Law of Motion in action! Space agencies like ISRO (India), NASA (USA) and ESA (Europe) launch rockets to send satellites, telescopes and astronauts into space.

๐Ÿš€ Fun Fact #5: India's space agency ISRO launched Chandrayaan-3 in 2023, which successfully landed near the Moon's south pole โ€” making India the first country to achieve this!
